Chandigarh, July 20

The Congress today rejected the Centre’s Committee on agriculture and MSP constituted recently, describing it as a farcical attempt that clearly aims at trivialising the serious issues concerning the agrarian crisis in the country.

“There is no mention of legal guarantee for the MSP in the terms of reference, thus defeating the very purpose of setting it up,” said All India Kisan Congress president Sukhpal Singh Khaira.

Condemning the exclusion of Punjab and Punjabi farmers from the committee, he said, “Keeping Punjabi farmers out of any agriculture or farm committee is like keeping out soul from the body.”

Khaira questioned appointment of former Agriculture Secretary Sanjay Aggarwal as the chairman of the committee claiming he had no practical knowledge or experience about agriculture and farming.

Meanwhile, six farmer unions — BKU (Rajewal), BKU (Urgahan), the AIKF, Kisan Sangharsh Committee Punjab, BKU Mansa and Azad Kisan Sangharsh Committee — have denounced the committee on MSP constituted unilaterally by the Central Government. Balbir Singh Rajewal and Prem Singh Bhangu, presidents, BKU and AIKF, respectively, said the Centre had run away from giving legal status to the MSP, the main demand of the SKM.
